If we take a stroll through the history of education, we may question the idea that good grades and impressive memory skills are the ultimate indicators of success. Seriously, how often have we heard students claim they studied hard only to forget everything a week later? And yet, we still label them as the “best” students.

At 果冻传媒, being a successful student is about much more than just understanding and remembering facts. Once upon a time, passing knowledge between humans required a fantastic memory to transfer valuable tidbits across generations. But guess what? Thanks to technology, that’s no longer the case! The past 20 years have brought us mind-blowing advancements, like the internet, revolutionizing our learning.

Nowadays, we can sift through colossal amounts of data and share information with a single click. Forget about relying solely on your memory鈥攜our trusty mobile device can instantly answer most of your burning questions!

In our fast-paced world, we need to put on our thinking caps and consider which skills and abilities will truly matter in the future. Brace yourselves for some eye-opening news: a recent study predicts that nearly half of all jobs in the US could become obsolete within the next decade, thanks to the rise of artificial intelligence and robotics. Robots are already snatching up tasks in hospitality, banking, and even healthcare. So, where does that leave the bright young minds of today?

The key lies in developing and enhancing skills that have true value and won’t be replaced by machines. Sure, your mobile device can tell you that four plus four equals eight (shocking, right?), but it can’t replicate your unique perception, insight, and social intelligence. And most importantly, it can’t compete with your creative intelligence!

Picture this: Young children are born with an innate sense of creativity, but sometimes, school lessons can smother that flame with a never-ending stream of formulas and processes. We believe in a better way鈥攁 way that nurtures creativity and hones skills in analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. These are the skills that transform children into the innovators and entrepreneurs of tomorrow!

By embracing their creative superpowers and encouraging out-of-the-box thinking, children will be equipped to tackle whatever the future throws their way. They’ll be the ones leading the charge, armed with the skills that can’t be replicated by any machine. And let’s not forget, they’ll have better opportunities for a life filled with success and happiness!

Let’s transform education into a fun and exhilarating experience that unleashes the full potential of every child. By prioritizing creativity, critical thinking, and social intelligence, we’ll equip our young heroes with the tools they need to shape their destinies and thrive in a world of possibilities.

SINGAPORE SWIM TEAM TRIP

Swim Team members from Grades 3 to 10 traveled to Singapore in November for the Cognita Regional Swim Meet, representing 果冻传媒 with pride and enthusiasm.

Our Swim Team training sessions’ hard work and dedication paid off as they showcased their talent and competitive spirit during the swimming events. Many students were rewarded with well-deserved medals, and it was great to see students encouraged and celebrated the achievements and successes of their teammates.

Our students showcased their exemplary sportsmanship and teamwork throughout the trip, and we are proud of the support, encouragement, and respect our students demonstrated towards competitors and teammates. The camaraderie and unity among the team were evident, especially during a group meal at Newton Circus, Singapore’s iconic outdoor hawker center.

Congratulations to our 果冻传媒 Swim Team for their outstanding performances and commendable representation of our school. Thank you to the staff and parent volunteers who supported and guided our students throughout this memorable journey!

BEIJING ACAMIS U19 VOLLEYBALL TRIP

It was a milestone for the 果冻传媒 community with our first-ever overseas trip for our Volleyball Team. Five staff members and 24 young Lions representing the U20 volleyball team traveled to Beijing to participate in the ACAMIS 2023 U19 Volleyball Gold Division Tournament.

Hosted at the British School of Beijing, the competition took place over three days with participating schools from other areas of Hong Kong and China. Not only did our students compete in the sport they love, but they also got to mix and socialize with students from diverse backgrounds.

The U20 boys team got close to the podium, achieving 4th place after significant investment and dedication. Congratulations to the boys’ team, as this was the best result they’ve had in an ACAMIS tournament to date. They will now set their sights next year to go one better and reach the finals!

A huge shout out to 果冻传媒鈥檚 girls’ team, who, although they did not make it to the podium, displayed amazing resilience and grew in teamwork and spirit.

However, the trip was not all about volleyball, as our students enjoyed some downtime away from the courts, gathering for hot pot at the open-spaced shopping area “Shine Hills鈥.

There were highs and lows throughout the journey, and lessons were learned along the way. We couldn’t be prouder of their conduct, resilience, sportsmanship, and determination, and we hope their experience will encourage more 果冻传媒 Lions to participate in future international events.

鈥淟ions on 3, 1-2-3 Go Lions鈥!

ESL in the Mainstream Professional Development for Staff

Shaila Samtani, Head of EAL(English as Additional Language)

As part of the 果冻传媒 community, we continuously look for ways to upskill ourselves as teaching professionals. As a professional teacher trainer, I have spent much of my teaching career in teacher training, particularly in international school settings and in the delivery of ESL in the Mainstream strategies. Recently I have had the privilege of working with our secondary teachers in delivering The Language, Literacy, and Learning course, a well-known professional development course from the United Kingdom.

Some topics we have delved into include:

  • understanding our second language learners
  • exploring what key factors affect their educational success
  • engaging in practical classroom strategies and activities to promote language development and curriculum access.

We have worked collaboratively on different strategies, and engaged in academic research to strengthen our pedagogical knowledge of language and how language works.

It has been wonderful to witness how committed our teachers are to teaching and learning, and student support. At 果冻传媒, we know that our bilingual and multilingual students have a wealth of knowledge they bring to the learning context. We are always looking for ways to acknowledge their contributions.聽

Este Verhave, G5 EAL Teacher聽

Eva Li, G4-5 ALP Teacher聽

The EAL department at 果冻传媒 endeavors to accommodate a range of learning needs, as we truly believe that 鈥渆very child matters鈥. This week, we鈥檇 like to introduce you to our English Literacy Intervention (ELI) Program and our Accelerated Learning Program (ALP), both customized to accommodate the varied language needs of Elementary students.

What is ELI (English Literacy Intervention)

English Literacy Intervention (ELI) is a short-term program where facilitators identify students who need assistance with their literacy skills. Teachers work with students in groups of 3 to 4 to improve their fluency, accuracy, and comprehension skills. Their progress is monitored throughout the quarter (usually three months) and individual needs are targeted.

Benefits of ELI

    • Focused phonics instruction
    • Help students grow their vocabulary
    • Consistent daily practice
    • Regular teacher feedback and support
    • Grow students鈥 confidence as readers and writers
    • Improve critical thinking skills

ALP (Accelerated Language Program) – How Does It Work

Accelerated Language Program (ALP) is a semi-sheltered class where selected EAL students can receive daily intensive support in core subjects, from English Language Arts to Math and STEMinn. It aims to support students in their English language acquisition through targeted and comprehensive support in literacy and language skills.

Students spend around 15 periods a week in the ALP class in a pull-out setting and the rest of the time with their respective homeroom classes for all subject areas, including specialist classes. Students learn grade-level content with differentiated and personalized support, following the mainstream curriculum with varying levels of accommodations and modifications.

During Language Arts, students work on building literacy skills, following the same Reader鈥檚 and Writer鈥檚 workshop model as their mainstream peers, while at the same time building language foundations and growing language proficiencies.

For math and STEMinn, students have access to scaffolded instructions and specific curricular resources which promote the development of their speaking, listening, reading, and writing. This hybrid and unique program offers students a chance to be part of the mainstream classrooms while receiving specialized EAL support in the areas where they need the most. The goal of ALP is to help students grow confidence, make accelerated progress, and move towards grade-level expectations.

As the world becomes even more globalized, bilingual programs have become increasingly for parents in international schools in Hong Kong. 果冻传媒 School Hong Kong offers an English/Mandarin bilingual program for Pre-primary (K3) to Grade 5 students. The unique bilingual program at 果冻传媒 provides subject-based English and Mandarin learning and a daily block of Mandarin instruction leveled by grade and proficiency level. Multiple language levels per grade allow students of varying proficiencies to achieve the highest level of language learning possible and deliver a truly personalized learning experience accessible to a wide range of Mandarin speakers.

Simplified Characters, Deep Topic-Based Learning

The curriculum for the 果冻传媒 bilingual program originated at 果冻传媒 International School Singapore, where Mandarin is taught using simplified Chinese characters. As international schools in Hong Kong attract students from various cultures, simplified characters make the program more accessible to a broader range of students of varying proficiencies. Teachers can go deeper into content learning by saving time on character memorization. Students dedicate additional time to learning history, different forms of writing, culture, and exciting projects. Students who move from local Hong Kong schools can transition to simplified characters supported by caring faculty while benefiting from various cultures and learning styles in their classrooms.

Inquiry-Based Learning

International schools in Hong Kong are popular with parents for delivering a more hands-on, inquiry-based approach. The bilingual program at 果冻传媒 is no exception, as it offers students a genuinely international teaching and learning experience at an internationally recognized IB school. The bilingual stream follows the same curriculum as the mainstream classes while developing proficiency and vocabulary across core subject areas. Students can express themselves in science, math, and humanities taught from a global perspective. A unique benefit at 果冻传媒 is bilingual STEM education, where students learn design thinking and in-demand skills such as coding. The critical thinking, collaboration, and presentation skills gained in both languages by the STEMinn program deliver a clear advantage over their monolingual peers.

Character Development
As Students enter middle school (Grade 6), they will have a strong foundation in Chinese and English with the IB skills and attributes that prepare them for the real world. They will continue their daily Mandarin lessons until graduation with the option of pursuing a bilingual IB Diploma.聽

After a busy start to the school year, we are all looking forward to the upcoming winter break! For staff, students, and parents, the holidays can bring a mix of much-needed downtime, along with extra stressors such as extended family dynamics, travel, and changes in routine. For some students, transitioning between the regular school routine and 鈥渉oliday mode鈥 (and then back again in January!) can impact their mood, frustration, withdrawal, sleep, self-regulation, and anxiety levels.聽

Here are some tips for parents to help children navigate holiday transitions and ensure that downtime is restful and restorative:聽

Tip #1: Give Advance Notice for Transitions & Events

  • Create a calendar for before and during the holidays.聽
  • Kids love to see things visually. By helping them create a calendar of what鈥檚 coming up, they see more concretely what plans are for them and the family.聽
  • When going to an event, tell your child in advance (or show them on your calendar as above) and tell them as much as you know about the event. How many people will be there? Who will be there that you know? Will they know any of the children or adults?聽

Tip #2: Offer Opportunities for Unstructured Time

When the whole day is scheduled, kids miss out on those small moments full of fun and giggles. Add that unplanned family time, and allow them to do what they enjoy (this does not mean screen time!). This is a must for them to understand their interests and have fun without anyone seriously monitoring them. Again, no screens!

Tip #3: Welcome Boredom

When kids are structured and engaged for the full day, we cannot expect them to sit quietly for a moment and get bored. Often when kids say, 鈥淚鈥檓 bored鈥, we rush in and give them a new game or play some video for them to ignore the boredom. This does not help them develop their own resilience and coping skills for the times when they have to wait or do a task they don鈥檛 enjoy. The more kids learn to cope with their boredom on their own, the more creative they will be.聽

Tip #4: Increase the Amount of Active Outside Play

Just as adults benefit from movement and exercise to help de-stress and reduce anxiety, so do children. Make plans for extra trips to the park, walk around the block after dinner or have a picnic and kick a ball around.

Tip #5: Preparing for Resuming School in January: Set up a Routine Ahead of Time

Although it can be tempting to ignore the inevitable, preparing your children to go back to school during the last week of the break can help support them through the transition. Writing out a schedule and posting it can be a helpful tool, so children can read or visually see what they need to do to get back into the groove. Some other ways to gradually change your children鈥檚 schedule include:

  • Moving bedtime up 陆 hour each night
  • Moving morning wake-up times to 陆 earlier each day
  • Regular bath or shower times each night
  • Limiting screen time in the evenings
  • Encouraging children to get dressed and eat breakfast shortly after getting up
  • Telling children when it would normally be time for them to go to school

As adults, we can make children feel more in control during times of transition by offering them opportunities to share their feelings and be heard if they are worried or stressed. We can prepare them for transitions by talking through what to expect and try not to let our own holiday stressors influence them. Remember, it is also important to give children a rest from structured activities and allow time for exploration and creativity, as well as connection time with family.

We wish you and your loved ones a relaxing and fun break and look forward to the New Year!

Parent Tips for Choosing the Right International School

Choosing an international school can be challenging, so where to begin? If a high proficiency in Mandarin or other languages is crucial to you as a parent, consider starting your search by understanding the language programs offered. Schools offer a wide range of languages and proficiencies – some offer additional language instruction three days a week while other schools have daily classes. In addition to frequency, some schools offer few levels, while others differentiate.聽

Research Second Language Options

Some key questions to consider: What languages are offered? How often? Are different levels offered? Is there a bilingual program? Is culture taught as part of the language classes? Program differences emerge in these details and will help parents shortlist their final options based on their priorities. 果冻传媒 School Hong Kong offers 48 levels of modern daily language with both Mandarin and Spanish options and an elementary bilingual program (English/Mandarin). All students must take a modern daily language and benefit from 40 minutes of instruction daily, leveled by grade and proficiency. This model allows students to achieve a higher mastery and education tailored to their needs. Students also explore culture in their language classes through art, poetry, and music to foster a global mindset and gain a deeper appreciation of the language and culture through project-based learning.

Next Steps

Agree on Priorities

Before visiting, it is helpful as a family to agree on the non-negotiable priorities, as each school is unique. What are you looking for in the teaching approach? Are specific art, athletic, or STEM programs vital? Are certain facilities essential? Agreeing on a few key offerings can help you ask the right questions and ensure you are visiting schools likely to meet your family’s needs.

Visit

After shortlisting schools, take time to visit! Beyond the language program, it is essential to understand how the school will foster your child’s skills and academics to achieve their ambitions.聽 Opportunities to meet the faculty and see the facilities help you decide if the school is the right fit. Sign-up for school tours, Open Days, or other events and visit as often as you wish – choosing a school is a big decision.聽聽

果冻传媒 School Hong Kong offers a wide range of events, tours, and Open Days to help parents understand our curriculum and culture. If you are looking for an innovative IB school with strong daily Mandarin or Spanish programs as well as聽 a bilingual option, visit us or for more details.
